- Reading – Acts 4:1-10 ESV
- 1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
- 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
- 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
- 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
- 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,
- 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.
- 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
- 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,
- 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,
- 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead–by him this man is standing before you well.
- Call To Worship – Romans 12:11-12 ESV

- 23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
- 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them,
- 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain?
- 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’–
- 27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
- 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.
- 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,
- 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
- 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Mondays at 6:30 pm to 7:30 starting Jan 22, 2024 will be a discipleship small group and Bible study using the 5Qs method. “Leadership” of the meeting will rotate between members who are attending but there is only 2 things needed to lead. The first (which can/will be provided) is a cheat sheet for the 5 questions. The second is choosing a passage from the Bible to be used as the reading and study focus. You can choose this however you want, maybe it is from your personal devotions, maybe you get it from a reading plan or lectionary, or maybe it was referenced in some book you are reading.
Hope to see you there!

- 10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
- 11 And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.
- 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability.”
- 13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.
- Call To Worship – Psalm 1:1-6 ESV
- 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
- 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
- 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
- 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
- 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
- 6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

- 1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
- 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple.
- 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.
- 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.”
- 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.
- 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”
- 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.
- 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
- 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God,
- 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

- 32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.
- 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
- 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold

- 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,

- 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

- 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
- 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
- 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.
- 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

- [Matthew 2:1-18 ESV]
- 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
- 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
- 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
- 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
- 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
- 6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'”
- 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.
- 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”
- 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.
- 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
- 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
- 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
- 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”
- 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt
- 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
- 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.
- 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
- 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”
-
- [Luke 2:22-38 ESV]
- 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
- 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)
- 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
- 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
- 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
- 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
- 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
- 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word;
- 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation
- 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
- 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”
- 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.
- 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed
- 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
- 36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,
- 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.
- 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

- Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; for he has come to his people and set them free.

- Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us.
- He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant.
- This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hand of our enemies
- free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.
- You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
- to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins.
- In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
- to shine on those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

- 4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
- 5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
- 6 A voice says, “Cry!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
- 7 The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass.
- 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
- 9 Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
- 10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.
- 11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
-
- [Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13 ESV] 1 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. LORD, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
- 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people; you covered all their sin. Selah
- …
- 8 Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.
- 9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.
- 10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.
- 11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky.
- 12 Yes, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
- 13 Righteousness will go before him and make his footsteps a way.
-
- [2 Peter 3:8-15 ESV]
- 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
- 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
- 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
- 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
- 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
- 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
- 14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.
- 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,
-
- [Mark 1:1-8 ESV]
- 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
- 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,
- 3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'”
- 4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
- 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
- 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.
- 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
- 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

- Sermon – “Genealogies? Why?”
- [Matthew 1:1-17 ESV]
- 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
- 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
- 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,
- 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,
- 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,
- 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,
- 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,
- 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah,
- 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
- 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah,
- 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
- 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
- 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor,
- 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud,
- 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob,
- 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
- 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.

- 1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
- 2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
- 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
- 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

- 12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
- 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
- 14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.
- 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
- 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
- 17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
- 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book,
- 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
- 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
- 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

- 6 And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
- 7 “And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
- 8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me,

- 10 And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.
