“I Am” Statements of Jesus – I Am The Good Shepherd

  • Prelude
  • Welcome | Announcements
  • Opening Prayer
  • Call To Worship – UMH 268 – Lent
    • O God our deliverer, you led your people of old through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide now the people of your church, that, following our Savior, we may walk through the wilderness of this world, toward the glory of the world to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen.
  • Reading – [John 10:1-10 ESV]
    • 1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.
    • 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
    • 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
    • 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
    • 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
    • 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
    • 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
    • 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
    • 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
    • 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  • Sermon – “I Am The Good Shepherd” – [John 10:11-16 ESV]
    • 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
    • 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
    • 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
    • 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,
    • 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
    • 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

“I Am” Statements of Jesus – I Am The Light of the World

  • Prelude
  • Welcome | Announcements
  • Opening Prayer
  • Call To Worship – UMH 574 – For Renewal of the Church
    • Renew your church, Lord, your people in this land. Save us from cheap words and self-deception in your service. In the power of your Spirit transform us, and shape us by your cross. Amen.
  • Reading – [John 9:1-5 ESV]

    • 1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.
    • 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
    • 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.
    • 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.
    • 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

    • 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
    • 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.”
    • 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
    • 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
    • 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.
    • 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true.
    • 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”
    • 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
    • 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

“I Am” Statements of Jesus – I Am The Vine

  • Prelude
  • Welcome | Announcements
  • Opening Prayer
  • Call To Worship – UMH 268 – Lent
    • O God our deliverer, you led your people of old through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. • Reading – [John 15:1-7 ESV]

    • 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
    • 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
    • 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
    • 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
    • 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
    • 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
    • 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

    • 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
    • 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
    • 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
    • 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
    • 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
    • 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.
    • 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
    • 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

    • Come, my Light, and illumine my darkness.
    • Come, my Life, and revive me from death.
    • Come, my Physician, and heal my wounds.
    • Come, Flame of divine love, and burn up the thorns of my sins, kindling my heart with the flame of thy love.
    • Come, my King, sit upon the throne of my heart and reign there.
    • For thou alone art my King and my Lord.
    • Amen.
  • Reading – [Luke 9:2-12 ESV]
    • 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
    • 3 And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.
    • 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.
    • 5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
    • 6 And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
    • 7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
    • 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen.
    • 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.
    • 10 On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida.
    • 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.
    • 12 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

    • 1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
    • 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
    • 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
    • 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
    • 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
    • 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
    • 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”
    • 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
    • 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
    • 10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
    • 11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.
    • 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.”
    • 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

    • 33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

    • 35 “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”
    • 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
  • Reading – [Psalm 42:1-8 ESV]
    • 1 To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah. As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
    • 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
    • 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?”
    • 4 These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.
    • 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation
    • 6 and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.

The Right Side of History: Our Present Anxiety

  • Prelude
  • Welcome | Announcements
      • Tue Mar 1 Heifer Project donation deadline
  • Opening Prayer
  • Call To Worship – Philippians 2:5-11 ESV
      • 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
      • 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
      • 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
      • 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
      • 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
      • 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
      • 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
  • Reading – [1 Peter 2:4-8 ESV]
      • 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,
      • 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
      • 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
      • 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
      • 8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

Time to Rebuild – Haggai 2022

  • Prelude
  • Welcome | Announcements
      • Tue Mar 1 Heifer Project donation deadline
  • Opening Prayer
  • Call To Worship – UMH #125
      • Seek the Lord who now is present, call upon the Lord, who is near,
      • let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts;
      • let them return, that the Lord may have mercy on them; that our God may abundantly pardon.
      • For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
      • For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
      • so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I intend, and prosper in the thing for which I send it.
  • Reading – [2 Corinthians 5:1-9 ESV]
      • 1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
      • 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling,
      • 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.
      • 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened–not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
      • 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
      • 6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord,
      • 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
      • 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
      • 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

      • 10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet,
      • 11 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law:
      • 12 ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?'” The priests answered and said, “No.”
      • 13 Then Haggai said, “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.”
      • 14 Then Haggai answered and said, “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean.
      • 15 Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD,
      • 16 how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty.
      • 17 I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD.
      • 18 Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider:
      • 19 Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.”

      • Blessed Lord, you have caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.
  • Reading – [Hebrews 11:16 ESV]
      • 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
  • Reading – [James 1:5-6 ESV]
      • 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

      • 4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts,
      • 5 according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.
      • 6 For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land.
      • 7 And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.
      • 8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts.

      • Sun Feb 13 Heifer Project donation deadline
  • Opening Prayer
  • Call To Worship – UMH #201
      • Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation. Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may celebrate aright the commemoration of the nativity, and may await with joy the coming in glory of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.
  • Reading – [Isaiah 6:1-6 ESV]
      • 1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
      • 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
      • 3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
      • 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
      • 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”
      • 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

      • 13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.”
      • 14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

      • Almighty and most merciful God, from you comes every good and perfect gift. We give you praise and thanks for all your mercies. Your goodness has created us, your bounty has sustained us, your discipline has chastened us, your patience has borne with us, your love has redeemed us. Give us a heart to love and serve you, and enable us to show our thankfulness for all your goodness and mercy by giving up ourselves to your service, and cheerfully submitting in all things to your blessed will; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

          • 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
          • 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.
          • 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

  • Sermon – “Is the Prophet Talking to Us?” – [Haggai 1:1-11 ESV]
      • 1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
      • 2 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.”
      • 3 Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,
      • 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?
      • 5 Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.
      • 6 You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.
      • 7 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.
      • 8 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD.
      • 9 You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.
      • 10 Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.
      • 11 And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.”

      • 21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
      • 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
      • 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)
      • 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
      • 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
      • 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
      • 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
      • 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
      • 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word;
      • 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation

      • 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
      • 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
      • 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
      • 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
      • 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
      • 6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'”
      • 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.
      • 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”
      • 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.
      • 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
      • 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
      • 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
